Oneonta Church of Christ
The Church of Christ traces its roots back to the New Testament era, as mentioned in Romans 16:16. Christ established the church on the Day of Pentecost in AD 33 (Acts 2), just 50 days after His ascension to Heaven. The church quickly spread from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and throughout the Roman Empire (Acts 1:8, Colossians 1:23). In the 1700s, the church was introduced to America, starting in the New England states.
We believe that religious unity is possible by simply following the New Testament pattern and setting aside human traditions. At the Oneonta Church of Christ, we strive to restore the teachings, practices, and passion found in the church described in the Bible.
The Oneonta Church of Christ was established on June 8, 1914, with the first meeting held in the home of Judge John Kelton. Early members included Judge and Mrs. Kelton, Mrs. L.D. Bynum, Mrs. H.C. McPherson, and Mrs. Woodard. For some time, the congregation met in Judge Kelton’s home until a lot was purchased, and a building was constructed on A Street.
The first sermon in the original building (left photo) was delivered by J.C. McQuiddy from Nashville, Tennessee, and the first Gospel Meeting in 1915 was led by Frank Moody. Over the years, notable preachers like N.B. Hardeman, Rex Turner, Willard Collins, and S. Pittman served the congregation.
Our first regular preacher was Mack Creel, followed by Pryde E. Hinton, who served from 1929 to 1958. During challenging times, dedicated members like Brice Bains, Clark McPherson, and Henry Shelton helped keep the church going. Mrs. H.C. McPherson, Sr., Mrs. A.S. Bains, and Mrs. A.L. Bains were pillars of faith, working tirelessly to support the church and ensure its future in the community.
In 1957, the original building (left photo) was replaced with a brick structure (right photo) on the same site at the corner of Second Avenue and A Street in Oneonta.
We are deeply thankful to God for the many blessings He has provided to the Oneonta Church of Christ. We honor the faithful Christians of the past who laid the foundation for our congregation. As we benefit from their hard work, we are committed to securing the future for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
